Mandatory contributions

All employees who earn between CHF 22,050 and CHF 88,200 per year pay mandatory contributions to their pension fund. All pension funds must offer identical, legally defined conditions. There is currently a minimum annual interest rate of 1.25% and a conversion rate of 6.8% (as of August 2024).

Non-mandatory contributions

However, many employers and collective labour agreements also provide for pension fund contributions on salaries above CHF 88,200 per year – these are known as non-mandatory contributions. These are not required by law and may offer better benefits to insured persons, such as in the event of death or disability. However, the conditions for non-mandatory contributions vary greatly, particularly in terms of contribution amounts, returns, insurance benefits, flexibility and costs. These differences depend on the pension fund and the selected pension plan.

Note: Non-mandatory contributions also include two methods: the universal method and the split method. You can find another post detailing the differences between these two methods and the advantages they each offer.
